Mid-summer and it has an old-fashioned feel to it. Heat, heat, heat. Although I don't remember it being that hot as a kid, probably because we lived near a lake and would spend pretty much dawn to dusk jumping in whenever it got too bad. There isn't a swimming lake nearby but there is the new Como pool, a jewel in the St. Paul Parks & Rec crown. And the rains came down...what a soaking, hope it's hitting our farmlands and comes in time to help increase their yields or at least prevent a further decrease. So far I think Minnesota farmers have not been affected like those to our south who are looking at total losses to their crops. Drought, forest fires, mudslides, tornadoes...the future will require some changes in the way we live and that will require a commitment to working together that has yet to emerge nationally. Still recovering from the the week of the 4th...the combination of activity and heat looms in my memory, but the turnout and fun remain as well. It is a great event and unlike anything I have heard about or experienced anywhere else. I got a very nice note from our Spirit of the Park winner, Bruce Perrizo. Wow, what a warm 4th of July. That was the hottest one I can remember, certainly since I've been in the Twin Cities and that's 35 years. It's official, a quick google check informs me that there was one other 100 degree 4th in 1949 - before I was born. In spite of that record-setting heat, it was a great day.
