What I Know 7-30-14

Last weekend at Wolfridge Environmental Center, I had the privilege of attending the graduation of 17 environmental scientists from Murray's E2 class. These promising 8th graders presented the research projects they had been working on for two weeks up at Wolfridge. They shared information about worm density in different types of soil, the relationship between small and large mammal eating patterns, and various other interesting observations about our natural world and human impact on it.

What I Know 7-23-14

Summer has finally arrived and it couldn't have come at better time for the July Park B4 Dark event last Thursday. This summer series, sponsored by Sunrise Banks, MetroIBA, our Como merchants and the Foundation, continues to grow but, as with any outdoor event, is dependent on nice weather to really make it go. And it went very well with lots of folks walking the avenue, shopping and enjoying food, drink and music. I haven't talked to all the businesses to see how sales went, but even if they...

What I Know 7-16-14

Well, finally we are having lovely weather...for September, but who's complaining? What a great 4th of July! Wonderful parade and picnic weather, a little cloudy & windy but that kept the bugs away. Nice to hear from our 5th grade patriotic essay winners talking about their personal "unsung heroes" - Mom, sisters and farmers - all very deserving of that moniker. Also nice to honor the good work of Cindy Thrasher and Julie Glowka who have run the 4th event for a decade plus. It's a reminder that these kinds of gatherings do not just happen, they take volunteers working toget...

What I Know 7-2-14

The obvious choice for lead topic this week is the annual 4th in the Park Parade & Picnic, what a wonderful celebration! Parade starts at 11 am from Luther Place and makes its way down Como Ave to Langford Park where the bandstand program includes the patriotic essays, elected official greetings and the Foundation's Spirit of the Park Award.

This year's Spirit winners are Julie Glowka and Cindy Thrasher who have had a hand in shepherding this extravaganza for the past two decades. They have wr...
