Beautiful fall day out there after some serious weather last night. We just got nipped by the storm, but it looked like there was damage and power outages in the southern and western suburbs. Luckily for us, the city effect seems to push storms north or south when they hit the metro.

After my last blog, some of those on the group email commented in a slightly sarcastic tone about my suggestion that it would be shorter than usual (I’m talking about you, Townley.) So, this one will definitely be shorter and, I will be taking time off next week so there will be no blog. That should give everyone a free pass to tune out the news and relax.

LIBRARY RE-OPENS - The big news this week is the re-opening of our library on Monday. I have only peeked through the windows but the enhancements look great, with more computer room and better flow for the check-out desks. There will be a Grand Reopening Party on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 6-8 pm. The party will feature the 40+ square foot LEGO City, LEGO Robotics, LEGO Star Wars giveaways, and costumed Star Wars characters. You won’t want to miss that! Arlene West posted this link to a neat story on the Carnegie libraries (ours is one.)

LAST PARK B4 DARK - My time off means I will miss next week’s last Park B4 Dark, but if you are in town, don’t you miss it. It will be the usual collection of food, fun, specials and music. Tiki Tim’s delicious sea food truck will add to the sumptuous food thrown down by our very own top chefs and the side walks will feature specials from our retailers. Sweet sounds will waft from both ends of the avenue, so come on down and show some love for our Como retail district.

MUFFULETTA GETS PIGGY - Speaking of food, last night was the Muffuletta’s pig roast and while I did not make the dinner feast, manager Chris Boyd gave me a tasty preview and visual of the featured guest. Looked like a full house on the patio and a lovely night which hopefully ended before the weather came through. Chris promised there would be more special dinners like this so keep your eyes open.

SUNRISE BBQ TOMORROW - Tomorrow, the Sunrise Banks will host their annual Customer Appreciation BBQ from 11-2pm. That’s a great event that always brings a good turnout. Come on down and enjoy the brats, music and socializing.

CEZ GIVE & TAKE - There will be another Creative Enterprise Zone Give & Take a week from tomorrow, Thursday, August 15, 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30) at The Lyric Lab at Carleton Place, 765 Hampden Ave. These events bring neighbors together to learn about each other and the amazing creativity flowing around the CEZ. Bring a blanket, if it’s nice weather it will be held outside.

GARAGE SALE - They are looking for volunteers to help put on the annual garage sale this year. Rich Nelson has been kind enough to organize this event for the past couple years, but he cannot do it alone. They are looking at a Sept. 14 date, so if you want this to happen, get a hold of Amy Sparks to help.

GOING VIRAL - There’s a great Youtube video from neighbor Soren Sackreiter promoting solar energy and mentioning our solar energy group. Soren is a student at the elementary school and entered the video in Will Steger’s Youth Video contest.

MLK PROGRAM - The Ramsey County Library in Roseville at 2180 Hamline Ave. N. is hosting MARTIN LUTHER KING AND THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON---A MUSICAL MEMORY, Thursday, August 15 at 7 pm. This is the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights March on Washington. Well-known Twin Cities actor/vocalist T. Mychael Rambo will be joined by an all-star group of musicians to present an historical tribute to the occasion on which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I have a Dream Speech." Come hear the music, remember the words and learn more about one of the most important episodes of American 20th century history.

SINGAROUND - Chanson Voice Studio is inviting the public to a singer/songwriter Showcase at 7pm August 18th. Everyone is welcome to play their original songs and/or hear other songwriters perform. Questions

That’s all for now. Take care of yourself and be a good neighbor. I’ll be back blogging on August  21.
